The bracelets are also used to create awareness among people, for example to spread awareness for breast cancer. The rubber bands have gained great popularity for promoting different causes and for advertising various messages by companies, organizations.

What are Rubber Bands?

Rubber bands though are quite common among people belonging to all types of age groups but still many people are oblivious of their existence. They are basically small in size and look like an oversized rubber band. The rubber bands are mostly simple in design and can be worn to every place for being light. Cancer Awareness Bracelets: Got Your Socially Responsible Silicone Rubber Bracelet Yet?

October 22nd, 2009 admin

Oh no, these silicone rubber bracelets aren’t necessarily what you think them to be. Most people look at these silicone rubber bracelets as just another silly fashion accessory that makes the women and girls go crazy. But in reality, these humble and often derided bracelets have succeeded in transgressing the boundaries of the fashion and style world and have managed to enter the hallowed precincts of a socially responsible “spread awareness” zone.

Yes, I am talking about the Cancer awareness bracelets. You must have heard of them or at least seen the yellow Lance Armstrong Foundation Cancer awareness bracelets? This particular Lance Armstrong Foundation supports the victims of cancer, spreads social awareness about cancer, supports cancer patients and they came up with this fabulous idea of selling yellow wristbands or Cancer awareness bracelets to raise funds for supporting the cause of their charity.

You won’t believe it but millions of people across the world have purchased and now proudly sport the famous yellow Cancer awareness bracelets. Naturally, as you can understand, millions of dollars have been raised through selling these Cancer awareness bracelets and the latter are well recognized wherever you might go. These Cancer awareness bracelets have made people stand up for the cause of cancer and made them fight this life threatening disease.

You will find many celebrities sporting Cancer awareness bracelets and they are all associated with various cancer fighting NGOs or social organizations or charity groups.

There are also breast Cancer awareness bracelets, cervical Cancer awareness bracelets, ovarian Cancer awareness bracelets as well as other kinds of Cancer awareness bracelets and the color of choice is a pretty pink. Pink is a healing, comforting and soothing color and it is also regarded as a girlie color. And this pink ribbon owes its origin to a 68 year old woman named Charlotte Haley who used to make and distribute peach ribbons.

Along with these ribbons she sent out handmade cards with the message – “the National Cancer Institute has sanctioned $1.8 billion as its annual budget for fighting cancer, but only 5% of that money is being utilized for the prevention of cancer. Please help us wake up America and its legislators by sporting this ribbon”. This lady, Haley had a grandmother, a sister and her own daughter who suffered from breast cancer.

This is the story behind the invention of the pink ribbon symbol. She had refused Self magazine’s request to use the peach cancer ribbon on grounds that it was too commercial and the magazine came up with the idea of a pink ribbon. This is how the pink ribbon was born. In fact Cancer awareness bracelets are extremely ubiquitous nowadays.

Breast Cancer Bracelets

Over two million women in the US have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer. It is estimate that over 40,000 people will die from breast cancer this year. Women have a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer, a frequency factor that has nearly doubled since the 1960’s. Breast cancer is the 7th among the leading causes of death among women in the United States.

The above facts are not pleasant to learn about and may even frighten many women, but becoming aware of the realities and risk that is around us can motivate us to do something about it.

Funding for breast cancer research is always in need. Keeping society conscious and aware of the constant need to support cancer research can help people to open up their wallets and give their financial support. One way activist have kept the cause alive is by getting others to wear pink rubber bracelets to remind people of this deadly disease.

These pink breast cancer bracelets are widely used as a means to promote support for breast cancer charities and to encourage contributions to cancer research. Many organizations sell or pass out these bracelets so everyone can see a reminder of this ongoing health issue.

The pink bracelets will have phrases such as; “Faith, Hope, Courage and Strength”, “Strive for a Cure”, or “Breast Cancer – Find a Cure”. Many bracelets simply have the ribbon symbol which many already understand to represent the breast cancer cause. Even just the color pink seems now have the same representational power as the symbol or phrases mentioned. They are all powerful symbols that continue to remind us of the thousands of women that are suffering.

Many organizations will have the breast cancer bracelets made with their preferred phrase and either give them away or sell them. As mentioned earlier, getting thousands of people to wear the cancer awareness bracelets gets the message out to the public. The wearing of the bracelets allows continued visibility and reminds everyone to give their support to the cause.

What is important to understand is these bracelets do not cost very much money to be made. The colored rubber bracelets are made out of durable silicone in various sizes and can include just about any text, symbol or phrase. Additionally, if enough are purchased in bulk, the cost per bracelet drops well below a dollar for each bracelet.

The inexpensive cost of the silicone rubber bracelets allows organizations and charities plenty of room for profit, making them an excellent choice to raise money and promote awareness.

Wear your breast cancer bracelets!

Those rubber wristbands are still selling.

Don’t believe it is too late to take advantage of the colored rubber wristbands concept for promoting an issue. Since the 2004 debut of the LIVESTRONG campaign started by the Lance Armstrong Foundation those yellow wristbands are selling extremely well. By 2005, 55 million wristbands have been sold, which is just a phenomenal achievement. Fortunately, the foundation did not patent or copyright this awareness wristband concept which I understand was a conscious decision, allowing other organizations and groups to utilize the same idea to promote their own causes.

Today, we can see various colors used to symbolize support for many other charities and causes. You will see pink rubber wristbands to promote awareness about breast cancer. Red wristbands have been used for D.A.R.E., HIV, and heart disease issues. White bracelets are being used to advance Peace on Earth and Right to Life ideology, as well as a few other issues. Nearly every color of the rainbow has now been adopted to symbolize and represent the numerous organizations and ideologies that are being advanced to the world. It is not uncommon to have multiple groups using the same colors, because the messages embossed on them will be the distinguishing factor that will set them apart from the others.

Using colored rubber wristbands to advance or sell an idea or product is still a very viable method to promote your ideology, charity, or product. As inexpensive as these wristbands are, it would be in your organizations best interest to consider them for your promotional needs.
